For Elizabeth and Lisa, our WA Legends/Alan Hinton scholars, the college experience this past autumn quarter proved challenging. Everett Community College, where both study, is conducting classes exclusively online. Furthermore, athletics competition has been halted during the pandemic.
Elizabeth, a freshman from Everett, writes that it’s much more “difficult to really understand the content of my classes, but I did my best and made it.” She is looking forward to finally getting on the soccer field this spring.
Lisa, a sophomore from Bothell, states she enjoyed her classes and the assistance provided through ECC online tutoring. After a two-week quarantine period, modified varsity soccer practices were conducted. “This year (2021) I look forward to growing my mindset on and off the pitch.” Soccer’s move to spring “makes my work-life balance more complicated, but I accept the challenge.”
George P. “Barney” Kempton, a native of Ireland who came to Seattle in 1914, is inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame as a charter member of the first class in Philadelphia. Kempton starred in the state league, then served many years as secretary to the state association, founded the CYO leagues and covered the sport for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. For more than four decades he was Washington’s Mr. Soccer.
Amidst swirling rumors of Major League Soccer naming Seattle as its next expansion franchise, Sounders beat Atlanta Ruckus, 4-0, before a sold-out Starfire Stadium for club’s fourth championship.
Bruce Raney scores in the 127th minute and Seattle Pacific stages one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Division II history, edging Alabama A&M, 1-0, in Miami. The Falcons used 12 players developed by Washington Youth Soccer clubs.
We want people to love the game by playing, watching, coaching, and supporting it. We want to preserve our history and share why we've become an epicenter for soccer. We want to celebrate our Legends, not only those famous but others on whose backs this community was built. And we want to inspire others, to take the torch, to create opportunities for the underserved and inspire future generations to give back to this Beautiful Game.
